The Actor’s Center of Asheville is proud to present, EXAMINATION. Based on the Novel by Perry Hartree, Adapted for the Stage by Erin Schmidt, don’t miss this Sci-fi/Thriller, coming to The Actor’s Center just in time for Halloween! In a world devoid of light and rife with corruption, a boy named Jasper tries to escape a life of suffering and violence in “The Drudges.” Little does he know his ascent from the lower class will leave him with blood on his hands and remorse in his heart. With an intriguing cast of characters and a menacing, otherworldly force that will stop at nothing to get what it wants, Examination will draw you in and it won’t let go!

TEENS! KIDS! YOUNG PEOPLE! You have asked, and we have heard you! We are excited to announce our 6 week teen programs that will begin this September. We want to offer some variety, so there will be different workshops every 6 weeks for different ages and interests. First up we have an Improv I for Teens taught by The Actor’s Center of Asheville’s own, Nina Ruffini for teens ages 13-17. For the younger kids, we have an Intro to Theatre for Youth, for ages 7-13 taught by another one of The Actor’s Center of Asheville’s own, Brooke German.

IMPROV I FOR TEENS

This fun and exciting 6 week Improv I for teens course, will focus on the importance of body awareness and experiments in balance, exploring space and movement to find emotion and characters, and creating scenes. This class will also explore elements of miming, comedy and improv games where students will learn to get in touch with their bodies and use movement and balance to emote characters and emotion. Using this knowledge as a base for character development students will begin to use improv to find a wide variety of characters. INTRO TO THEATRE for Youth

This 6-week workshop is an introduction to theatre for children ages 7-13. The class will present an overview of theatre, with special emphasis on the art of story-telling.  Students will participate in fun group exercises and games that will enable them to work together as a team. Team goals will include activities that build trust in order to teach movement, ensemble work, improv, stage direction, environment observation, and character development.

August 2018

September 14th, & 15th we will be showcasing a political comedy and commentary show created and hosted by one of The Actor’s Center of Asheville’s finest, Marlene Thompson.

It’s called “From the Ashes,” and it’s a political comedy and commentary show. There will be an opening monologue, segments from a desk, filmed sketches and on-the-street segments. If you’ve seen John Oliver or Samantha Bee’s shows, you know the format, but this show adds in a local, Asheville element along with the national stories.

There will be a live show at the Actor’s Center of Asheville in Black Mountain September 14-15, and she will also be making videos of every segment to post to YouTube and Funny or Die.

We are pleased to announce our upcoming intensives, Total Preparation I & II with master teachers Erica Arvold & Richard Warner coming up this October 5-7, 2018!

There will be 3 Intensive offerings to choose from. Total Preparation I : Art Meets Craft for Adults, Total Preparation I : Art Meets Craft for Youth, & Total Preparation II : Character Exercises (with Total Preparation I as a pre-requisit). In addition, we will be offering an Observer spot in our Total Preparation I Adult class as well. The deadline to sign up for these intensives is Wed, September 26th, 2016. Total Preparation I: Art Meets Craft  
Friday, October 5th, 2018
4pm-8pm

 
Total Preparation I offers actors personal, in-depth co-instruction and practical, professional advice on the entire audition process from master teachers Richard Warner and Erica Arvold. The class specifically addresses film & television auditions and is for intermediate adult actors (college-level and above). Completion of this class, which introduces the first five steps of the Arvold/Warner 10-step preparation checklist, is a prerequisite for Total Preparation II: Character Exercises.
Features of the class include:
script analysis
    • character creation
    • audition techniques
    • on-camera practice
    • individual coaching
Actors learn preparation techniques to create exciting, original and personal work. The first half of class is discussion and exercise based, and the second half is intensive coaching – please come prepared to work!

Schedule Appointment

Enrolling as an observer (instead of a participant) allows students to witness and absorb the concepts presented in Total Preparation I at a different pace without pressure to engage or perform. Observing the class is a unique way to be present for the essential information (with the ability to take notes and do the written work) and also witness the integration of the first five preparation steps by watching participants’ explorations and scene work. Observers can be new students or previous students looking to review the steps in the Arvold/Warner preparation process. Observers will be able to ask questions with Richard Warner during the mid-class break and join the Q & A session at the end of this intensive course.

The class specifically addresses film & television auditions and is for the young actor (age 10 to 17). Completion of this class is a prerequisite for Character Agility Youth.

This four-hour intensive class expands and deepens the craft concepts introduced in Total Preparation I. Actors explore in-depth the final five steps of the Arvold/Warner 10-step preparation checklist, participate in group exercises and receive individual coaching through scene work led by master teachers Richard Warner and Erica Arvold. Required prerequisite: Total Preparation I
Features of the class include:
  • sensory work
  • in-depth script analysis
  • external and internal character development
  • on-camera practice
  • personalized coaching
Grounded in the detailed study of a scene, actors practice efficient, effective techniques for creating action-based characters. The first half of class is discussion and exercise based, and the second half is intensive coaching – please come prepared to work!
Participation in Total Preparation II requires the prerequisite enrollment and participation in Total Preparation I. Students who have not completed Total Preparation I as an attendant may not enroll in Total Preparation II. PLEASE NOTE : Taking Total Preparation I as an Observer does NOT qualify you for Total Preparation II.

Actor’s will receive a cast breakdown of roles to choose from in advance for their audition. They will then be expected to tape their auditions, and send them back to Matthew Sefick no later than June 8th.  Each class is limited to 16 students per class, so be sure to secure your spot early, by clicking one of the button’s above as this workshop is filling up quickly! Registration ends officially on May 30th.

More about Matthew Sefick:

Matthew Sefick, CSA is a casting director based out of Charleston, SC.  In 2005 he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Master’s Degree in Media Arts.  Since college he has gained over 10 years of experience in the Film and Television Industry and is a member of the Casting Society of America as well as the Television Academy.  He began working in casting in the offices of Lifetime’s hit series Army Wives and helped cast over 100 episodes of the show and was named Casting Director for the final season of the series – Season 7.  Since then he has cast feature films, television movies and commercials in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.  Sefick is excited to currently be casting the second season of a television series called The Inspectors that is airing on Saturday mornings on CBS.
